Water Suppression Systems

The extinguishing feature of water has been known since ancient times. Therefore, the first systems established with the aim of fire extinguishing have been sprinkler systems that use water as the extinguishing agent. Sprinkler systems, which have been constantly evolving from the first established extinguishing system and which play an active role in terms of fire extinguishing, are commonly used in A and C class fires which can occur in any living areas.

 

In sprinkler systems; the sprinkler heads attached to a fixed piping system automatically open if there is a direct temperature increase or hot gas(smoke, water vapor etc.) contact . The fire is extinguished by discharging the water that comes from open sprinkler heads to the fire area. In addition, fire sprinklers around the fire area also get opened to prevent the spread of fire. Thanks to its high cooling capacity, water absorbs large amounts of heat from the fire area and extinguishes the fire.

Sprinkler System Types:

Wet Pipe System:

In wet pipe sprinkler systems, the pipes are continuously filled with pressurized water. With the opening of the sprinkler head, the water in the pipe directly interferes with the fire. As there is continuous water in the lines it is applied at places where the temperature does not exceed 95 ° C. In places with the risk of freezing, the system must be protected against frost by applications such as the antifreeze system or the electronic monitoring heating cable system. When there is water flow in the system; information can be transmitted to the facility’s or building's central automation system via the alarm pressure switch and / or flow switches on the wet alarm valve.

Dry pipe sprinkler system;

 

Systems in which compressed air or nitrogen is present instead of pressure in pipelines. After opening the sprinkler head, firstly the compressed air or nitrogen in the pipeline is discharged. Then the extinguishing water is discharged through the dry alarm valve to the area. Dry pipe systems should only be installed in areas where there is a possibility of frost damage and where the temperature is high. When there is water flow in the system; the system can transfer information to the facility’s or building's central automation system via a dry alarm valve and / or flow switches.It is generally used with upright type sprinkler heads.

Dominant Alarm System;

In systems with dominant alarm system; there is no water or air in the pipelines. There is no glass tubes of sprinkler heads. Valves are triggered by hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical trimmers. Following this, the dominant valve is opened, water is discharged from all the sprinkler heads connected to the van to the area. When there is water flow in the system; the system can transfer information to the facility’s or building's central automation system via a dry alarm valve and / or flow switches. It can be used with upright and pendent type sprinkler heads.

Pre-action Sprinkler Systems;

there is pressure air or nitrogen instead of pressurized water. After opening the sprinkler head, firstly the compressed air or nitrogen in the pipeline is discharged. But; for water discharging ,beside the sprinkling of the sprinkler heads, the alarm information of the fire detection system also needs to be verified. It is used in facilities where the fire detection needs to be done very fast and where the damages to the water should be minimized such as computer rooms, museums, libraries, historical buildings etc. When there is water flow in the system; Pre-action can inform the plant or facility's central automation system via valves and / or flow switches.

A- Single Locked Pre-Response Sprinkler System

 

In this system, the passage of water from the pre-reacting alarm valve to the piping system begins only when an automatic detection system is switched on. There is no water flow to the piping system with the opening of the sprinkler head. The activation method is determined according to the detection system that is suitable for use at the site. Activation can be pneumatic or electric. During the fire, water comes only from the sprinklers whose glass tube has exploded.

 

B- Double Locked Pre-Response Sprinkler System

 

In this system, both the opening of the sprinkler head and the verification of the detection system are required to pass the water from the pre-reacting alarm valve to the piping system. After the opening of the sprinkler head, firstly the compressed air or nitrogen in the pipeline is discharged, and with the triggering from the detection system the water passes through the pipeline. The activation method is determined according to the detection system that is suitable for use at the site. Activation can be pneumatic or electric.
